South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga as acting president while he and Deputy President Paul Mashatile are abroad on official duties. The Presidency confirmed that the appointment complies with section 90(1) of the constitution, which allows for temporary delegation of presidential authority.
Ramaphosa is currently in Ireland for an official visit and will later attend the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, Belgium. Meanwhile, Deputy President Mashatile is in Juba, South Sudan, in his role as special envoy, where he will meet President Salva Kiir and other stakeholders to advance peace and stability efforts under the revitalised peace agreement.
Motshekga will oversee the responsibilities of the presidency during their absence, ensuring continuity in governance and executive decision-making.
