South Africa Grants Visa-Free Entry to Bulgarian Citizens

by admin477351

South Africa has officially lifted visa requirements for Bulgarian citizens, allowing them to enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, family visits, or business purposes. The new policy took effect on October 7, streamlining travel between the two nations and strengthening bilateral relations.

According to Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry, the decision “reflects the high level of bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the Republic of South Africa” and is expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. However, the arrangement is not reciprocal, as South African passport holders still need a Schengen visa to enter Bulgaria.

While the exemption applies only to short-term visits, Bulgarians seeking to study, work, or start a business in South Africa must continue to apply for the relevant visa under the country’s Immigration Act. Despite the closure of South Africa’s embassy in Sofia earlier this year, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic and economic cooperation.

The inclusion of Bulgaria adds to a growing list of European Union nations whose citizens enjoy visa-free access to South Africa, a move expected to boost tourism and business ties between the two countries.
