In a significant diplomatic development, Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a new security architecture in the Middle East, emphasizing collaboration, dialogue, and adherence to national sovereignty. This proposal was put forth during Xi’s discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo, where he outlined a comprehensive four-point strategy aimed at bolstering regional security cooperation. This approach seeks to address interlinked conflicts, foster economic growth, and enhance international coordination efforts.
Xi highlighted the importance of Middle Eastern nations assuming greater responsibility for their own security, while also expressing opposition to external interference in the region’s affairs. In his remarks, Xi underscored the enduring significance of the Palestinian issue as central to resolving broader tensions throughout the Middle East. He further extended China’s willingness to collaborate with regional countries in safeguarding international shipping routes, advancing economic development, and tackling the root causes of conflict. Xi emphasized that the United Nations Charter and international law should remain the bedrock for addressing regional challenges.
Economic relations between China and Egypt were also a focal point of the talks. Xi called for enhanced cooperation in diverse sectors, including infrastructure, energy, agriculture, communications, electric vehicles, green energy, aerospace, and the digital economy. This is particularly significant as China has maintained its status as Egypt’s largest trading partner and primary source of imports for 14 consecutive years. The bilateral trade volume between the two nations has seen a notable increase, rising from $10.21 billion in 2013 to $20.79 billion in 2025.
The meeting culminated in the signing of over 20 cooperation agreements between China and Egypt, spanning areas such as artificial intelligence, trade, technology, education, transportation, and industrial supply chains. Additionally, both countries issued a joint statement aimed at reinforcing their comprehensive strategic partnership, further solidifying the economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations. This collaboration reflects both nations’ commitment to building a robust and mutually beneficial relationship.
