South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is deliberating on whether to reinstate suspended national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola. This consideration follows the National Prosecuting Authority’s decision to withdraw criminal charges against Masemola, which were connected to alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act.
The charges against Masemola were dropped in a Pretoria magistrate’s court. They were initially linked to a South African Police Service healthcare tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District. The withdrawal of charges came after the National Prosecuting Authority reviewed evidence and determined there was no reasonable prospect of securing a successful prosecution.
Despite the withdrawal, Masemola’s suspension remains in place until President Ramaphosa makes a formal decision regarding his return to the role of national police commissioner. Masemola has expressed his readiness to resume his duties in light of the court’s decision.
The National Prosecuting Authority clarified that the decision to withdraw charges was based on assessments conducted by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption and insights from a case assessment panel and independent legal counsel. The authority emphasized that the outcome of Masemola’s case does not automatically resolve his suspension.
While Masemola’s legal troubles appear to be resolved, the broader investigation into the Medicare24 contract continues. Other individuals accused of corruption and irregularities related to the tender are still being scrutinized.
