South African defender Olwethu Makhanya has been recognized for his outstanding performances in September, earning the title of Scottish Premiership Player of the Month. Playing for Rangers, the 22-year-old contributed significantly to the team’s perfect record over the month, which included victories in all five matches, four of which were Scottish Premiership fixtures.
Makhanya joined Rangers from Philadelphia Union in July, and quickly made his mark in the club’s defense. His solid performances have caught the attention of clubs across Europe, with reported interest from teams in England, Spain, Germany, France, and Italy. His defensive prowess was evident in his early league appearances, where he consistently recorded multiple clearances, blocks, and interceptions, aiding Rangers in maintaining several clean sheets.
In recognition of the team’s success, Rangers manager Derek McInnes was also honored, receiving the Manager of the Month award. The dual accolades underscore the club’s strong performance during September and highlight Makhanya’s rapid adaptation and impact in Scottish football.
Makhanya’s individual award not only reflects his excellent start in the Scottish Premiership but also enhances his profile on the European stage. As the next transfer window approaches, the heightened interest in his abilities could lead to opportunities in some of Europe’s top leagues.
