Trump Dismissed Her, Now Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Gives Him Her Nobel Prize

In a twist of diplomatic irony, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump, a man who had previously dismissed her as unfit to lead. The meeting at the White House on Thursday marked the first time the two had met in person. Machado told reporters she presented the medal to acknowledge Trump’s “unique commitment” to freedom.

President Trump has frequently expressed that he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, making the gift particularly resonant. However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee dampened the implications of the transfer by stating that the prize cannot be revoked or shared. The title of Nobel Laureate remains with Machado, regardless of the medal’s physical location.

Machado explained the gift by invoking the history of the Marquis de Lafayette and Simon Bolivar. She stated that after 200 years, her people were giving back to the “heir of Washington,” referencing the U.S. President. This historical parallel was used to frame the meeting as a continuation of a centuries-old struggle for independence.

The political reality is less romantic. Trump has reportedly argued that Machado does not command the respect necessary to lead Venezuela. Instead, he has threatened interim president Delcy Rodriguez with force to ensure compliance with U.S. demands, specifically regarding oil companies. This indicates a strategy driven more by resource interests than purely by the opposition’s political goals.

Despite Trump’s past dismissals and current strategic ambiguity, Machado called the meeting “great.” She emphasized that Trump knows the situation and cares about the people’s suffering. The gift of the medal appears to be a calculated move to win over a skeptical President and align him more closely with her faction.
