South Africa has emerged as the second-best destination globally for wildlife holidays according to a recent international survey, further cementing its reputation as a premier spot for nature and safari tourism. The survey, which gathered insights from 2,400 travellers across 12 different countries, revealed that a significant 72% of participants prioritize wildlife experiences when selecting their holiday destinations. This trend is mirrored in the digital realm, where there has been a staggering 211% increase in global searches for “wildlife holidays” over the past year.

While Australia claimed the top spot in the survey, South Africa proudly secured second place, outpacing renowned wildlife destinations like Kenya, Canada, and China. The country continues to enchant visitors with its diverse ecosystems and remarkable biodiversity. From the thrill of Big Five safaris to the serene experience of whale watching, birding, and interactions with African penguins, South Africa offers an array of wildlife experiences that cater to varied interests.

The report underscores a noticeable shift in travel preferences, with a growing number of tourists opting for immersive nature experiences over traditional sightseeing activities. This change reflects a broader trend where travelers are seeking deeper connections with the natural world during their journeys.

On a global scale, the giant panda emerged as the most sought-after animal that travelers wish to see in the wild. Following closely were elephants, kangaroos, koalas, and whales. Among Africa’s iconic Big Five, the elephant was the sole representative to make it to the global top five, highlighting its enduring appeal among wildlife enthusiasts worldwide.
