As South Africa gears up for its local government elections on November 4, the African National Congress (ANC) is on the brink of unveiling its candidate for Johannesburg mayor. This announcement is highly anticipated, with Johannesburg poised to be one of the most fiercely contested metropolitan areas. Currently, the city is under the leadership of an ANC-led coalition, with Dada Morero at the helm as executive mayor. However, Morero’s candidacy is in question after he lost his position as the party’s Greater Johannesburg regional chairperson in 2025, prompting the ANC to initiate a broader candidate-selection process following an earlier unsuccessful nomination.

Among the names surfacing as potential candidates is Reverend Frank Chikane, who has become a prominent figure in the selection discussions following interviews conducted by the party. Meanwhile, other major political parties have already declared their candidates for the Johannesburg mayoral race. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have put forward Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, while ActionSA has chosen former Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has selected Helen Zille, who previously served as both mayor of Cape Town and premier of the Western Cape.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has nominated Mlungisi Mabaso to represent them, and several other parties including Rise Mzansi, Build One South Africa (BOSA), the Land Party, and Al Jama-ah have also announced their respective candidates. The upcoming election is expected to spotlight critical issues such as service delivery, infrastructure, water and electricity supply, housing, crime, and local economic development, all of which are central to the concerns of Johannesburg’s residents.

This election cycle is crucial for political parties and constituents alike, as the results will significantly influence the governance and future development of one of South Africa’s largest cities. With various parties vying for control, the announcements of mayoral candidates signal the beginning of an intense electoral battle, with each contender seeking to address the pressing needs of Johannesburg’s diverse population.
